A
general introduction to U-boats, dealing with: the birth of the
U-boat Arm; away from the convoy routes; captured U-boats; administration
of the U-boat Arm; radar; technical data and information about
the different types of boats; the men; the end of the war. There
is a chronology and the book is illustrated with maps, diagrams
and a collection of interesting photographs, most of which had
never been published before. Being one of the first books on the
subject, it was written at a time when much of the information
was still secret
or hard to come by. Its publication created quite a stir, probably
because it did not follow conventional Allied thinking. British
Authorities even attempted to prevent its publication because
the book was considered to have been a violation of the Official
Secrets Act.
